Pre-State Tel Aviv Yiddish-Hebrew Dictionary (c. 1940) – Yisrael Yevarkhiyahu
Description
Author: Israel Yevarkhiyahu (Bogoslavsky) (ישראל יברכיהו (בוגוסלבסקי)), a prominent early 20th-century educator, lexicographer, and linguist who specialized in creating instructional language tools for the global Jewish community.
Content: This volume is a complete, dual-sectioned companion dictionary featuring both the Yiddish-Hebrew Dictionary (Milon Yiddish-Ivri / מילון אידיש-עברי) and its corresponding Hebrew-Yiddish section. It contains fully vocalized Hebrew translations mapped alongside idiomatic Yiddish phrases, acting as a crucial cultural tool during the linguistic revival eras of the early 20th century.
Bibliographical Significance: This work was published in Tel Aviv under the landmark M. Newman Publishers (הוצאת ספרים מ. ניומן). It represents the vibrant pre-state Hebrew printing movement in Mandatory Palestine, published during a period when the local community was actively integrating hundreds of thousands of Yiddish-speaking European immigrants into an everyday Hebrew-speaking society.
Condition report:
Status: Fair to Good Antique Condition (Heavy handling signs).
Binding: Housed in its original period hard binding consisting of textured cloth along the spine and printed paper-wrapped boards. The outer cover displays noticeable age-toning, localized paper loss at the corners, and heavy handling wear along the edges.
Interior: The text block exhibits substantial signs of historical study. Several interior pages along the main inner gutters have been structurally stabilized and reinforced using clear adhesive tape over time to keep the leaves intact. The title page is intact with a minor chip to the upper corner edge. The pages display uniform natural browning and light historical foxing, but the text remains fully legible throughout.
