Description

An important 19th-century rabbinic work, distinguished by a personal handwritten dedication and signature from the author, alongside endorsements from the generation’s greatest luminaries.

  • The Work & Author: Kvod Yisrael, authored by Rabbi Dovid Shlomo Slouschz, who served as a prominent Moreh Tzedek (rabbinic judge) in Odessa.
  • Author’s Signed Inscription: A defining and valuable feature of this volume is the personal dedication handwritten and signed by the author at the very top of the title page. Our reading of the cursive script suggests the dedication is addressed to Rabbi Gabriel HaLevi, the Av Beit Din (head of the rabbinical court) of Bakhmut. Please note that the exact deciphering of the antique handwriting is subject to interpretation. The inscription seemingly reads: "My book is sent to the great Rabbi, sharp and expert in the chambers of Torah… Gabriel HaLevi, Av Beit Din of the holy community of Bakhmut… from me, who is honored to be counted among his acquaintances and friends / Dovid Shlomo Slouschz the author / Moreh Tzedek here in Odessa."
  • Prominent Recommendations (Haskamot): The work opens with significant, glowing endorsements from two of the most illustrious and influential rabbinic leaders of the 19th century:
    • Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor: The renowned Chief Rabbi of Kovno and the undisputed leading Halakhic authority (Posek Hador) of his time.
    • Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer: The eminent leader of Modern Orthodox Jewry in Germany and founder of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin.
  • Publication Details: Printed in Warsaw at the press of Chaim Kelter, 1883.
