Description

  • Overview: An exceptionally rare, early 20th-century Russian-printed halachic booklet titled Sefer Midrash Yosef (מדרש יוסף) or Hagahot MaHaRYaSh (הגהות מהרי"ש / The Annotations of MaHaRYaSh), representing the elusive second volume of this specialized series.
  • Author: Authored by the enigmatic Talmudic scholar and community activist Rabbi Yosef Shaposhnik (יוסף בהרב הגדול מור"ר משה זצוק"ל שאפאטשניק; 1882–1937). Born in Bessarabia into a distinguished rabbinic family, Shaposhnik migrated to the United Kingdom shortly after this work was published, where he became universally famous as the eccentric "Outlaw Rabbi of Whitechapel." He ran a renegade London rabbinical court, published fiercely radical newspapers, and sparked international halachic controversy by mass-releasing agunot (war widows) against the authority of the British Chief Rabbinate.
    • Archival Reference: For an extensive bibliographical overview of Rabbi Yosef Shaposhnik’s turbulent life, renegade London publications, and his historic ideological battles within the British sub-culture, collectors may consult his official research catalogue file preserved in the National Library of Israel archives at https://www.nli.org.il/en/a-topic/987007266187705171
  • Content & Structure: This specialized volume is dedicated to deep, advanced textual annotations, textual emendations (Hagahot), and complex legal analysis (Drush) focused specifically on the Talmudic tractates of Shabbat and Eruvin. The text showcases the author’s early, absolute genius and mastery of classical Talmudic exegesis before his transition into radical public activism in London.
  • Print Origin & Censorship: Pristinely printed in the major pre-revolution Russian cultural hub of Odessa (אדעסא) in 1906 by the landmark Typo-Lithographia of A. M. Dikno. The title page and prefaces feature fascinating parallel Russian Cyrillic layouts (МИДРОШЪ ІОСИФЪ) and official Imperial censorship clearances dated February 4, 1906 ("Дозволено Цензурою / Одесса, 4 Февраля 1906 г.").
  • Rarity & Value: Because Rabbi Shaposhnik printed his works in very short, highly specialized, self-funded pamphlets rather than large institutional press runs, their survival rate is staggeringly low. Surviving Russian-period imprints from his pre-London era are virtually non-existent on the open market, making this an elite acquisition for collectors of Anglo-Jewish history, controversial rabbinica, and early 20th-century European Judaica.

  • Condition report:
