Description

  • Overview: A rare and poignant primary document from the interwar period of European rabbinic history, entirely handwritten and signed on the official bilingual stationery of a prominent Lithuanian-trained communal leader who was murdered in the Holocaust.
  • Author: The eminent scholar and intellectual, Rabbi Menos Isser Polonski (הרב מנוס איסר פולונסקי; 1882–1941). Born in Lithuania, he served with distinction as a communal rabbi in Barysaw, Ukraine, before assuming a senior rabbinic post in Švenčionys (שווינציאן / Święciany, Vilna district). He was celebrated as a master orator and dynamic activist for national and religious development.
  • Content: Written in a clear, highly methodical European rabbinic cursive script on his official personal letterhead ("RABIN m. Świeciany z. Wil. / מנוס איסר פאלענסקי החופ"ק שווינציאן"). The text remains untranscribed and unstudied, offering an excellent window of historical and genealogical discovery for the winning bidder.
  • Notable Connection: Rabbi Polonski was a pioneering figure in early 20th-century religious cultural networks, famously publishing the work Puma De-Nahora. He was tragically murdered by the Nazis alongside his community during the destruction of the Vilna-area ghettos in 1941. Surviving artifacts from his rabbinate are exceptionally rare.

  • Condition report:

    Status: Very Good Antique Condition.

Details: The single ledger sheet is structurally clean, sound, and fully intact. It exhibits its original light horizontal folding creases from its interwar mailing. The printed letterhead text in both Hebrew and Polish typography is perfectly crisp, and the elaborate handwritten ink text block and signature remain entirely bold, dark, and perfectly legible.
