Judaica and Hasidic Books and Manuscripts
Lot 12:
Description
A rare and historically significant edition of The Student’s Prayer Book (סידור התלמיד), published in London in 1874. This work features a groundbreaking interlineary translation of the Daily, Sabbath, and Festival prayers, allowing students to see the English translation directly beneath the Hebrew words. It also includes A Compendium of the Hebrew Accidence (קיצור דקדוק הלשון העברית), a concise guide to Hebrew grammar intended to help the student master the sacred language.
Author:
Rev. A. P. Mendes (הרב אברהם פריירה מנדס). Rev. Mendes was a prominent Sephardic educator and scholar in the 19th century. His pedagogical approach in The Student’s Prayer Book (סידור התלמיד) was highly influential in the development of Anglo-Jewish education.
Notable Connection:
This specific 1874 London printing is a prized item for collectors of Anglo-Judaica and early pedagogical prayer books. Records indicate that a similar copy of this edition appeared in a prominent New York auction in 1995, highlighting its established status as a sought-after volume among serious collectors of Hebrew liturgy and rare translations.
Condition report:
The volume is complete. It remains in its original green-brown textured cloth binding. There is a visible vertical tear on the title page; however, the page remains intact and the text is not lost. Importantly, the spine is firmly attached, and the internal binding is structurally sound. The pages show light, natural yellowing consistent with a 150-year-old volume.
